On May 4, at about 1:07 p.m., the Middletown Police conducted a vehicle stop for a traffic violation on East Lake Street, just East of Caribou Lane. As the Officer was talking to the driver and passenger the officer observed a suspicious object in the passenger’s front pant pocket.
When the passenger, later identified as James Cleary, 25, of Chestertown, Md., noticed the officer looking at the object, he pulled his T-shirt down in an attempt to cover it. During a pat down of Cleary, officers discovered bundles of heroin. While attempting to place Cleary into custody, Cleary began to resist and attempted to flee. Officers were able to subdue him and placed him into custody.
Officers removed the package from Cleary’s right front pants pocket, which contained 65 individually wrapped packets of heroin.
Cleary was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arraigned and committed to Howard Young correctional facility in default of $10,300 secured bond.
