On March 22, the Middletown Police were dispatched to the Dove Run Center parking lot, Middletown, for a report of a stolen motor vehicle. The investigation revealed that a 2012 Ford Focus was taken from the lot while the victim was working. The victim reported that her keys had to have been removed from her pocketbook while she worked.
The vehicle was recovered on March 28, in the same parking lot, displaying a stolen registration plate. The vehicle was returned to the owner but the keys were still missing. Shortly after the vehicle was turned over to the victim, it was stolen again.
Middletown Police conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle which was displaying another stolen registration plate. Matthew Brennan, 21, of Hampstead Court, Middletown, was taken into custody without incident.
Further investigation revealed that Brennan, who worked with the victim, had taken her keys on March 22. He also stole two Delaware registration plates from vehicles in Middletown and in Newark and used them on the stolen vehicle. Brennan was charged with two counts of theft of a motor vehicle, three counts of theft under $1,500 and one count of criminal mischief. He also had an active warrant from the Delaware State Police Troop 2. Brennan was arraigned on the stated charges and was released on $6,100 unsecured bond.
