On Thursday, July 26, at about 1:30 p.m., Middletown Police Officer DiGati initiated a traffic stop for a registration violation in the area of the Middletown Commons Shopping Center. As the vehicle came to a stop, the front seat passenger quickly exited the vehicle and began walking away from the vehicle. Officer DiGati ordered the subject, later identified as Marquis Neal, 25, of Vincent Circle, Middletown, back into the vehicle. As the DiGati approached Neal, the operator, who was subsequently identified as Amir Watts, 21, of Ashland Street, Middletown, exited the driver’s side of the vehicle and fled on foot.
DiGati pursued Watts on foot for about one mile, crossing U.S. 301 at the intersection with West Main Street. Responding officers were able to assist with the apprehension of Watts in the rear of the Hampden Inn, located on Sand Hill Drive. Watts complained of respiratory problems at the time of arrest and was transported to Christiana Medical Center and was treated and released. Watts was charged with resisting arrest and a myriad of traffic violations.
Officers then determined that the passenger in the vehicle, Neal, had an outstanding capias for resisting arrest.
Neal was transported to Middletown PD, where he was released on $500 unsecured bond.
Watts was committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Center in Wilmington on $7,180 cash-only bond.
